Hunters Lodge: Long Eddy, NY

About The Property

Some properties exude an air of dignity and history, and this wonderful 1890s former hunting lodge does just that. Set behind a row of enormous spruce trees and flanked by mature maples that explode with autumnal color, the house is set on an expansive property that straddles both sides of the scenic and sleepy country road. It incorporates a long, stunning stretch of Basket Brook, a delightful trout feeder stream that meets with the mighty Delaware River three miles downstream.

The current owners have built on earlier updates, and thankfully have retained much of the home’s character. So the kitchen features shaker-style cabinetry, marble countertops and a handy island, as well as a couple of large, built-in kitchen cupboards, and two retro ranges, one of which is gas, the other gas and wood.

Dark beadboard paneling creates a cozy vibe in the rather large dining room. A double arched door leads out to the covered back porch, which overlooks the pretty pond, alive with tadpoles at the moment.

A sturdy cast iron insert in the brick fireplace emits an incredible amount of heat in the living room, supplementing the forced air heat on the ground floor. Built-in bookshelves were likely filled with tomes on fishing strategy and hunting tales in its former life, and they still present an attractive opportunity for display.

Across the hall the office/den (which has also served as a gym during the pandemic) offers a private space with ever more bookshelves. The ground floor is rounded off with an updated full bathroom with shower.

Upstairs there are five rooms (four bedrooms and a smaller room which could also be a bedroom or an office). The spacious master is two smaller rooms combined, and the full bathroom has a deep clawfoot tub, and a glass-enclosed, tiled shower.

The pièce de résistance at Hunters Lodge is the lovely old barn. She stands strong and capably hosts festive gatherings. The sliding barn door opens to reveal a sprawling deck cantilevered out over a gorgeous pond. Open the gate along the edge and jump in! It’s plenty deep (and dare I say, refreshing!).

The 167 acres includes trails or old roads, one of which leads up the hill in back affording incredible views. The majority of the land is in a 480-A Forestry program, which requires preservation (non-development) of the land in exchange for greatly-reduced taxes.
