Back in 1870, when Ulysses S Grant was president, life in PA was very different. Around this home, though, one could question just how different. Sitting on the front porch you might think the time-space continuum has been warped. Surrounded by pastureland in a beautiful valley in Damascus, the location is one of the prettiest areas in the region. This spacious 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom home, spans over 2000 sq ft.

The entry to the home is through a cozy screened in porch the perfect place for bug-free summer’s evening. The larger, eat-in kitchen is super well laid out. There is a pass-through to a sunny back room, which currently houses a baby grand piano, that could be a breakfast area or mud room. The dining room is grand in scale. It’s a perfect spot for a quiet quotidian meal or a dynamic dinner party. The main floor bathroom has a shower stall. Add your favorite sofa in the nicely sized den and make a heavenly, curl-up-with-a-good-book or series-binging locale. The living room has lovely light with windows on two sides, and the walls seem to emanate some intangible sense of history. The hardwood floors are original throughout most the house.

The front door leads out to the shady rocking chair porch. Think of sipping iced tea, or something a little stronger, as the dappled light of the large pine dances. The flower beds below are yearning to be revitalized.

The original stairs, with its noble balustrade and hardwood tread, have been (thankfully) preserved throughout the years. The first two bedrooms are at the front of the home. Both have plenty of room for a king size bed and have double exposures. A hall leads back to a large bedroom in the back, which is bright with the southern sun. One could blow the ceiling up to the roof and have an incredible bedroom/office combo. The 4th bedroom is the most petite, with room for a single bed.

The 2.75 acres punch way about their weight. The grassy surroundings are gorgeous. There is a larger spring-fed pond and a smaller one that has overgrown and could be cleared out. Some areas of the lawn have been allowed to grow high in the summer but could be more regularly mowed to create even more room to romp. Neighboring the home are large tracts of land owned by local farmers.

The sweet river towns of Callicoon (13 minutes) and Narrowsburg (18 minutes) are nearby. Both offer some wonderful, locally owned shops and restaurants.

I have passed the house on my bike route for years. Every time I can’t help but to admire its charm.
